Dr Hassan’s Hospital and Diagnostic Center has begun preventive genetic testing which will detect the likelihood of a disease occurring in an individual.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Shabihul Hassan, made this known yesterday in Abuja at a seminar on preventive genetic testing. He said the technology will enable the hospital discover the possibility of a diseases in an individual before he or she actually falls ill.
“This step is part of our ongoing drive and long term commitment to bring into Nigeria the best and most advanced of health technology and to ensure that less and less people have to travel abroad for medical treatment,” he said.
Also speaking, the Director of Laboratory Services of the Hospital, Dr. Godswill Okara, said “It is all about using genetic information to detect and predict the presence of disease.”
“Genetic information is stored in a micromolecule called DNA that is a repository of information about a human being. Through the manipulation of the DNA, we can know the predisposition of disease, the progression of disease and control of disease,” he added.
He further stated that the genetic testing will be an option in the Full Health Check package at the hospital for anyone who would like to have the test done.
